Take us through your thoughts the moment you realized your child was ready to come into this world.

Uh man.. my anxiety was through the roof for almost three whole days… 3 whole days… literally one of the most emotional weekends I have ever had in my life. Lol My game plan was to let the nurses handle mostly everything as in helping her push. So picture this, the whole nurse crew assisting your lady push and after 4 or 5 minutes they let you guys know that she is only dilated 6 centimeters ? my heart was racing like they was doing something & my son was about to come into the world. Lol So the nursing crew leaves to attend to another family. So that when I snapped out of being quiet and started couching my lady to focus on her breathing and her pushes. I’m talking about Doc Rivers game 6 of the 2008 playoffs couching. Lol After 8 mins my son was delivered into the world. With just me & one nurse.

What were your physical, mental, and emotional feelings while in the delivery room as your child was entering the world.

So this is my firstborn & first time seeing a birth. So come to think of it I completely felt overwhelming confidence & a sign of relief. I’m sure you guys know what I thought about the birth right???? IT WAS Beautiful guys come on!. Lol

Describe what it felt like holding your child for the first time?

The feeling was indescribable, my little man had10 toes & 10 fingers and head full of hair. I was so amazed at everything to be honest I still am.

Do you have any advice for fathers who are expecting for the first time?

First off just these good brothers on this podcast could tell you it’s going to get rough however, the love for your newborn will overshadow every little bump in the road. But trust that there will be days that will be phenomenal. My son is 3 months as of the 14 of September and he brings so much life, energy, joy, & inspiration. I was then inspired to create a business that’ll help him & my family. And hopefully one day he’ll be able to pick up where I left off. I started a clothing brand called @1250Brand

12:50pm was the time that he was born. That time will forever be sentimental to me because that was the time that I became a father.

Take us through your thoughts the moment you realized your child was ready to come into this world.

I was ready for whatever and it literally felt like game time! I was thinking this is actually happening and I have to step up even more. In my mind I saw my woman meeting her healthy daughter and I kept all positive thoughts. There were moments when I didn’t know what to think or feel as well. I guess melancholy is the best way to describe it.

What were your physical, mental, and emotional feelings while in the delivery room as your child was entering the world.

Physically I was drained as I was up 48hrs prior. Mentally I was just standing as strong as I could. I’m a stoic individual so emotionally nothing showed externally other than a calm cool demeanor. It wasn’t until my daughter was coming out that my eyes welled up.

Describe what it felt like holding your child for the first time?

It was extremely warm, heartfelt, and empowering! I literally felt like I was on top of the world.

Do you have any advice for fathers who are expecting for the first time?

Be ready and willing to meet any requests from the mother of your child. Whatever she throws your way, eat it! Don’t stress her out, make this as smooth and comfortable for her and your child as possible.

Take us through your thoughts the moment you realized your child was ready to come into this world.

The moment when you realize that your child is about to enter the world feels like time just stops and nothing else matters in the world. I have been in this space several times, but the time that stands out the most was with my last son, Joseph. We anticipated his miraculous arrival for many months because he was diagnosed early in his development with Trisomy 13 . I can remember the day my wife began having compilations with preeclampsia (a potentially dangerous pregnancy complication characterized by high blood pressure). I was really nervous and quite honestly scared that I would loose both my baby and my wife.

What were your physical, mental, and emotional feelings while in the delivery room as your child was entering the world.

In the labor and delivery room, there is a quite and unspoken anticipation as you child is making their arrival into the world. It is both mentally and physically exhausting; and sleep is virtually impossible. I can remember physically supporting my wife and doing everything I can to make the process most comfortable for her. I wanted to preserve as many emotions as I could because we knew that even if our son, Joseph survived the delivery process, we may not have much time with him after his birth.

Describe what it felt like holding your child for the first time?

I felt a great sense of hope. To know that though many doctors and specialists told us that we should terminate our son’s life due to his condition, but to hold him if only for a few moments as he struggled to breath was important. As a parent and especially as a father, my role is to protect and shield my children from the dangers of this world. Holding my son validated that goal.

Do you have any advice for fathers who are expecting for the first time?

The single greatest thing you can do for your child is to be PRESENT. You will make mistakes and may not know what to do in every situation, but if you are active in your child’s life starting from that delivery room, they will always know that they are loved and valued.

Take us through your thoughts the moment you realized your child was ready to come into this world.

My wife woke me up around 2am saying she was feeling contractions. That’s all I needed to hear! I grabbed my contraction timer (the app) and within 5 minutes, the app was alerting us to get to the hospital immediately.

When we arrived they told us She was at 5cm and that confirmed it was Showtime!

I couldn’t wait to meet my little man. I felt prepared. I had read books like What to Expect, watched YouTube videos and sought out advice from some amazing Fathers I knew.

What were your physical, mental, and emotional feelings while in the delivery room as your child was entering the world.

Physically I was tired… But there’s no complaining when your wife is laboring with your child lol. Our doula(a woman employed to provide guidance, support and advocacy to pregnant women) taught me the “Counter-Pressure Technique” it involved an intensive deep massage like squeeze on the lower back to offset the pain of contractions.

My wife was so grateful for the relief it brought on so with every contraction I was kneeding and pressing on Her, helping Her through. It helped Her but honestly it gave me joy to be there for Her & our Son.

My wife labored for about 7 hours total, she demanded no pain medication, no epidural no NOTHING. She was a SAVAGE before thee Stallion lol. We practiced “hypno-birthing” it’s in short, basically words of affirmation and creating an atmosphere of positivity.

When it was time to push I watched His head come through and I remember crying immediately. Couldn’t believe what I saw, but just that fast he was back in lol she pushed Him out in about 3, yes THREE minutes!

He entered this world a sweet & calm Baby Boy, with peace and clarity because my Wife is A CHAMPION. She always says we we’re a team so she was definitely our MVP!

Describe what it felt like holding your child for the first time?

I remember looking Trey in His eyes thinking I”will not let you down”.

My wife and I tried for over 6 years to have children and He was the literal manifestation of our dreams and prayers… Right in my hands.

Holding him was unreal. It’s still unreal just over a year later. We celebrate every milestone. We cherish every moment.

Do you have any advice for fathers who are expecting for the first time?

Educate yourself. We had a perfect scenario. I came in being very protective and hyper-aware because of the danger Black Women face when it comes to maternity.

Be an advocate for your wife because she may not be able to advocate for herself and your child. You can’t advocate if you aren’t informed, Brothers!

Try to learn the counter pressure technique. She will love you for it… Maybe do some bicep curls and grip training lol cause your arms and hands will get tired.

Good luck to every 1st time Father.

Brad Edwards Shares His “Dads In Delivery” Story

Take us through your thoughts the moment you realized your child was ready to come into this world.

My daughter was our rainbow baby, we lost twins in 2017 so even up to the day we were going in to be induced none of it felt real. I was being positive and trusting in God’s plan but for some reason I didn’t really want to have that overjoyed feeling into I was able to see we face and hear her cry. It was most def a roller coaster of emotions leading up to that moment.

brad edwards-dear fathers

What were your physical, mental, and emotional feelings while in the delivery room as your child was entering the world.

When labor was taking place I was completely focused on the health of the mother and child. We were listening to our favorite gospel songs and I just remember the “Closer” by Marvin Sapp when I heard the doctor say “She is almost there, look at all that hair”. Me being me I was happy to hear my baby wasn’t bald headed so I look over to see and BOOM the head pops out. I yelled “Yo WTF” loud as heck lol, 15 seconds later the whole body was out. and it was the most amazing thing I has ever witnessed.

Describe what it felt like holding your child for the first time?

It was indescribable. Something I wanted for so long was finally here and it was so much love in this little face that I was looking into that I couldn’t do anything but smile and cry at the same time. It was the single greatest moment of my life.

Do you have any advice for fathers who are expecting for the first time?

I had recently co-founded a health care start up, Melcura, so I did months of research and interviews with black mothers and I knew the risks that they face with every labor and delivery. The best thing I can tell any father is, do your research and consult a doula about what can take place, and be present in the delivery so you can be an advocate for the mother and child. Don’t go kick it with your friends, be there to make sure your family is safe.

Take us through your thoughts the moment you realized your child was ready to come into this world.

I’m a Father of two but ill talk about the most recent experience. It was about 3am my girl woke me up saying she thinks her water broke. I was confused and shocked at the same time because 1 i was half sleep and 2 she wasn’t due for another month. Once we confirmed that in fact her water had broke i knew i had to gather myself and start thinking logically because our son was about to be born during the Covid Pandemic. My thoughts were simply how to get to the hospital as safe as possible and also how to keep my girl as calm as possible.

What were your physical, mental, and emotional feelings while in the delivery room as your child was entering the world.

Its a roller coaster of all things. As she was pushing through contractions i caught myself squeezing my fist tight and holding my breath. My mind was racing thinking of all things, how he was going to look, if he was going to be healthy, would this virus affect him somehow.

Describe what it felt like holding your child for the first time?

That moment is truly unexplainable to be honest, but the best way i can explain it is that it feels like you’re holding a part of your own heart and watching it beat outside your body. A level of connectivity that’s beyond measure.

Do you have any advice for fathers who are expecting for the first time?

Be present with your Queen. Continue to learn her as she goes through the different stages of pregnancy. Be proactive. Be a solution based thinker. And most importantly understand that being a father is a privilege.
