Take us through your thoughts the moment you realized your child was ready to come into this world.

I was excited yet nervous. My fiancée woke me up in the middle of the night and said she felt like the baby was coming. At first I felt like he wasn’t coming just yet because she overreacts and we were 2 weeks out but when the doctor came back in she said it was time to get the ball rolling. I was caught off guard but ready, he is my first child so I didn’t know what to expect.

Everett Dawkins-dear fathers

What were your physical, mental, and emotional feelings while in the delivery room as your child was entering the world.

Physically I was tired, he came earlier than expected so we weren’t fully prepared but we made it all work. Mentally I was just praying for a healthy baby and a healthy mama. My emotions were everywhere, I was excited to meet the little one who was already feisty in his mothers belly.

Describe what it felt like holding your child for the first time?

It felt surreal. We had been praying and hoping for a healthy baby and to finally be able to hold him in my arms was mesmerizing for me. It was a joy that I’ll never forget.

Do you have any advice for fathers who are expecting for the first time?

Help your spouse out as much as possible, they may be extra needy but remember that they are carrying a extra human in their body. Be prepared for delivery way ahead of due date because you never know when the baby will come, our son came 2 weeks ahead of time. Embrace the experience, not everyone is blessed with the opportunity to have a child so don’t take it for granted.

Take us through your thoughts the moment you realized your child was ready to come into this world.

To be honest , I don’t even know where to start. We went in for a regular doctors appointment to see how the baby was doing, she was 33 weeks pregnant at the time. Come to find out she was 8 centimeters dilated ?.!!! They got us into a room hooked her up to everything then it was green lights to get the baby out of her. I was calm and nervous at the same time because they had to do an emergency C section. I didn’t know what to do.

Take us through your thoughts the moment you realized your child was ready to come into this world.

The moment I realized Aaven was ready to join us outside of the placenta, my wife, Jasmin had already been telling me throughout the day she was feeling some abnormal movements close to her pelvic area. Having had the to go bags ready, it was an easy transition to the vehicle. I felt ready, I had a mental check list of things to make sure I checked off prior to getting to and upon arrival to the hospital. I was thinking, WOW I am going to meet my son today and brief thoughts of planning his whole life for him while also having brief doubts of whether or not I will be the father I want to be. The nine months my wife held AJ inside of her I also prepared for nine months on how to be the best father I could be. I felt as though if I was mentally prepared for this moment there was nothing that could possibly come up that I wouldn’t be able to handle. Having an athletic background certainly helped the mental preparation and “pressure” that would be necessary for the next 24+ hours.

What were your physical, mental, and emotional feelings while in the delivery room as your child was entering the world.

Feelings of excitement, anticipation, and calm readiness took over me. I felt ready for the moment and ready to submit to my wife with whatever she needed to make the delivery a smooth process. The main emotion was excitement, I felt that I was going to meet a being that my wife and I created/manifested.

Describe what it felt like holding your child for the first time?

Holding my child for the first time felt like love, however I felt that emotion had been rewritten in that moment. I felt like I was reintroduced to a peace of myself and my wife in a physical form that we had only known through conversation or dreams prior to that moment. That moment and feeling could not be described in words, any day I think back to that day I could describe it in a different way of what that feeling felt like.

Do you have any advice for fathers who are expecting for the first time?

If I would provide any advice to future fathers expected for the first time, I would say first to embrace the full process of the pregnancy to the delivery. Truly embrace and submit to your wife’s needs (reasonably) while standing your ground to set healthy boundaries. Your partners body is going through things you couldn’t even begin to fathom and the best way to support her is to support and empathy. There is no guide to the process and every pregnancy is different so preparation is vital. Reading up a bit on the babies development and what your partner’s body is currently going through will certainly help. Communication is key, create a safe space for your wife to communicate her feelings and for you to openly share your thoughts or feelings as well. The goal is to be on the same page as your wife by the delivery date. There will be moments where she is in so much pain that you will have to speak on her behalf so it is crucial that you are able to deliver in that moment.

Take us through your thoughts the moment you realized your child was ready to come into this world.

It’s our first born so for a few hours the nurses were saying “yes, you’re only 4cm dilated.” but within a half hour after them saying that, my girlfriend jumped to 10cm dilation! Our eyes and facial expressions were like a kid in a candy store! We were so jolly! I started pacing back & forth because I was so eager and excited to finally meet my daughter!

Man, I was mentally stable because I had to be strong for all of us; but once things settled down, it hit me harder. There were so many emotions that I expressed for the way in which she given me happiness and there were so many metaphors that I could apply to this relationship.

Describe what it felt like holding your child for the first time?

Greatest feeling in the world. It’s weird, but holding my child for the first time I felt so calm, relaxed, and a feeling of so much pressure being released from me. It’s weird but I can say it’s quite a experience. You’ll see.

Do you have any advice for fathers who are expecting for the first time?

Future fathers, be patient no matter how tired/hungry you get. Be there for your lady 100% and keep her calm while in labor sooth her, encourage her. Be her biggest fan.

Seeing your child for the first time is literally the best feeling in the world. I heard people say it but didn’t quite understand it until I actually experienced it.

Take us through your thoughts the moment you realized your child was ready to come into this world.

It was Christmas Day and my wife was experiencing contractions here and there. We thought it was Braxton Hicks, but she was like a week and a half from her due date. We looked in the baby book the hospital gave us and saw she was in pre-labor which could last for hours or days. But then later that night, she was really going through it and was ready to go to the hospital. I thought it was a false alarm. Didn’t even pack a bag, but when we got there, they were like YEP, the baby is coming. All the excitement, nervousness, and fear hit me like a ton of bricks.

What were your physical, mental, and emotional feelings while in the delivery room as your child was entering the world.

Being in the delivery room had me full of adrenaline! But it was a mix of nerves and excitement. We’ve been waiting for this for about 9 months , but in the back of your mind, you’re thinking of all the things that can go wrong. I was trying to remain calm for my wife’s sake. A lot of prayers! Both out loud and silently. The delivery room also forced me to have patience. I thought the baby would come right after we got there, but it took 17 hours! Truthfully, it’s just a really anxious experience! But in the crux of it, you don’t realize all the emotions your experiencing!

Describe what it felt like holding your child for the first time?

It’s hard to explain but I’ll put it this way; I had a lot of doubt and fear of what the future Holding my child for the first time is when I released all those emotions! All that fear, nervousness, and anxiety just leaves your body in the form of tears! I couldn’t stop crying. I didn’t know I could love anything that quickly. In that moment, you realize fatherly instincts are real. Holding your child makes you realize how capable you are to do anything!

Do you have any advice for fathers who are expecting for the first time?

Be a part of the process as much as possible! Starting from conception. Go to as many appointments as you can. Ask the doctors questions when you have them. Read on the topic as much as you can. There’s no how to guide on being a father, but reading other’s stories can be beneficial to your journey. Support the mother! Child birth is no easy task. They’ll need your help with literally everything! Hold your child and do skin to skin as much as possible! Trust your instincts!

Take us through your thoughts the moment you realized your child was ready to come into this world.

We got a call from the Doctor saying that she would be induced, my heart felt like it was going to jump out of my throat. I was in the highest state of excitement while at the same time feeling an uneasiness and thinking about if I was truly ready. I called my mother and she eased my nerves by saying,” you’re already ready for this, you just have to believe it and it will manifest.”

What were your physical, mental, and emotional feelings while in the delivery room as your child was entering the world.

As he began to crown, I was at a loss for words, I’ve never seen anything so brutal and so beautiful all at the same time. When he came all the way out I must’ve said “That’s me!” 6 or 7 times. He resembled me so much I was paralyzed by the shock and awe. Then when he cried and gazed up at my wife I began to shed tears of joy along with him.

Describe what it felt like holding your child for the first time?

It’s hard to explain but I’ll put it this way; I had a lot of doubt and fear of what the future might’ve held, but in that moment I first held him, all was truly right with the world and my being. To sum it up in one word I’d use the word “Peace” to describe that feeling.

Do you have any advice for fathers who are expecting for the first time?

For all the Fathers to be, learn to be empathetic understanding and patient. Those traits are paramount to the development of your child and just as crucial when dealing the mother of your child. There will be rough times, sleepless nights, missed meals but as a father I feel our role in our families is to provide, protect, and endure.
