What does being a father mean to you?

Being a father means everything to me. Growing up with an absent father, whom I’ve later built a strong relationship with, was hard. Those years of not having someone around to guide me, definitely hindered me in a few ways, but it taught me independence. It means I get to give back that same independence to my kids, but be there to guide them when necessary.

Describe your experience with your father growing up and how that impacted you today.

I always knew I had a father, but there was so much my mother couldn’t teach me. I didn’t know how to be a man, growing up in such a big city. I felt small, but I didn’t have anyone to tell me how huge of an impact I can play in the world. It added to my growth knowing I molded that experience for myself and that’s all based on my past experiences.

What things did you take from your experience growing up into your own fatherhood journey?

Always be positive, no matter the outcome.
Failures are only a portion of that lessons we need to leave and help us grow.

Have you had any obstacles on your fatherhood journey?

Man, the beginning was an obstacle in itself. Being a new father of 25 week year old micro-preemies will throw a wrench in anyone’s plan. We didn’t get to celebrate things the way we wanted, but we grew our faith stronger during the process. Having to believe your kids would survive daily was a test and not everyone has the strength to stay focused daily. Thankfully, my wife and I stayed true to the goal and we are more than grateful for what life has granted us.

What advice would you give others new on their fatherhood journey?

Enjoy every single day. Take a new day to be a better father and learn the best and worst of your child. No matter how frustrating things get, you have the power to reset and recharge. When you feel down about something, reach out to another father or your parent to help level set. It all gets better in the end

If you wanted to write a quick note to your father, starting with “Dear Father,” what would it be?

Dear Father, I never lost faith in you and though I may have been disappointed in you not always being there, I’m glad my babies got to know you. The stories I hear about you being this cool, calm guy keeps me calm and sane. I hope to see you soon and enjoy the summer with you and the babies.
