What does being a father mean to you?

Being a father, to me, is setting the best example for my son and future kids. A role model. Have them understand that they are the future. They can be something great.

There are guys hitting females and females letting that happen to themselves. The kids see everything and they repeat it when they get older or at their current age. I want my son and future kids to respect each other and to respect themselves.

Describe your experience with your father growing up and how that impacted you today.

My dad used to take me everywhere with him. Sporting events, places her coached at, to see my family, etc. He made sure I knew most of my family. I still hope to do the same for my son and future children.

What things did you take from your experience growing up into your own fatherhood journey?

I’d like to take my son on vacations. Me and him have never taken a vacation together. My dad took me places and I’d like to do that plus more with my son.

Make sure he knows my side of the family. He hasn’t met a lot of people and I would love to make that happen.

Have you had any obstacles on your fatherhood journey?

Money was always an issue with me and I felt like the lack of it was always an excuse to not do more for my son. Whether it was traveling or having my own place. Diapers, pull-ups, clothes, etc. Now, I’ve been working harder to make sure that he has these things now. Minus the diapers and pull-ups of course.

What advice would you give others new on their fatherhood journey?

For the upcoming fathers in the world, don’t be afraid to sacrifice. If you can, but some things early. Clothes, accessories, diapers, etc. If you can’t use them, someone down the line, whether it be neighbor, family member, friend or even foe, could use them.

Don’t be scared to speak up if you need help. It’s ok to struggle but also show your kids that it’s ok to ask for help as well.

If you wanted to write a quick note to your father, starting with “Dear Father,” what would it be?

Dear Father,

To live up to the Bolden name I know I’m still doing my best. We are family men. Tremendous fathers. I might not be the best ball player lol but I do show the love and support towards your grandson who I wish you would’ve met. You passed away to early to begin to even give me the advice I need. But I look back at whatever I know that you’ve done for me and I’m still trying to work with it. Love you Daddy and I miss you!!
