What does being a father mean to you?
What being a father means to me, is doing whatever it takes. It’s being able to stand tall through any battle so she knows no matter what, Daddy will protect you. Making sure she never has to second guess if she’s loved and no one will ever stop her father from being there for her. She’ll know her father will do whatever it takes to ensure her she’s taken care of. Also being able to share knowledge with her so she’ll be prepared to take on the world with her head high. Being a father is consistently doing whatever it takes for her greater good. No matter what it is, and it’ll never stop.
Describe your experience with your father growing up and how that impacted you today.
Amazing. My parents split up when I was 3 so I never had the two parent household. I’ve been between Queens, Ny and Tampa, Fl my whole life. One thing for sure is I NEVER had to question what love is. They both showed me everyday, no matter who I was with at the time. I can say I’m truly blessed to have the parents I have. Far from perfect but I wouldn’t trade them for anyone. I’ve never seen either of them disrespect each other, ever. That’s very rare and I appreciate them both for that.
What things did you take from your experience growing up into your own fatherhood journey?
Having freedom. As a child I wasn’t sheltered and my parents both let me experience the world. They trusted me to watch cartoons like The Simpsons and not take away any bad habits. If I did, the corrected me and explained why. They never let me get out of line. I carry the respect today as a 34 year old man. Most of all, have as much fun as u possibly can with them. Till this day nothing tops the feelings of running with my mom through the mall to get in line for new Jordan’s lol or the feeling of watching Stone Cold open up a can live in the arena. You can’t beat those moments. I love my parents for who they are.
Have you had any obstacles on your fatherhood journey? If so, explain.
Many. Too many to talk about lol I know things will turn around but as of rn, it’s tough. What I do know is that God is shaping me into the man I need to be for my daughter. Sometimes that means going through some painful obstacles to come out a better version.
What advice would you give others new on their fatherhood journey?
Buckle your seatbelt lol communicate with your partner and understand that you’ll have to take some jabs. Don’t be afraid to be vulnerable. When things get tough, think about the man you will become that will make your child proud to have as a father. Keep working on yourself. Don’t beat yourself up. You’re not alone. Have patience (even in unfair and unjust circumstances) . Understand that there’s no real book for this, you have create your own. Have fun!
If you could write a quick letter to your father, starting with “Dear Father,” what would you say?
Dear Father, no will ever handle this role like you do. Now that I’m a father, I can only pray that I’ll be even 1/4 of the man you are to me. You’re the reason I push to keep getting better and spread love to everyone. Because we all need it.
