What does being a father mean to you?

This sometimes feels like a loaded question, to me it means being present in my child’s life. We see so many kids nowadays lost and misguided due to lack of a male or father figures being around. I want to be able to be there for my child for all of the smallest life events as well as the big ones. My daughters 18 months old and has already taught me so much and i feel Like as she grows and continues to learn, I grow and learn along with her.

Describe your experience with your father growing up and how that impacted you today.

I grew up in a very strict Haitian household. My father was a hard-working and strict man. As with many fathers in our Haitian culture and we rarely heard the words I love you said to us as children. As important as it is to do things because you love your children it’s also important to express to them how you feel. It’s something that plays a huge part in my life today as I raise my daughter with not only telling her that I love her by showing it to her as well.

What things did you take from your experience growing up into your own fatherhood journey?

Communication plays a big part and a parent child relationship. It’s tough to have open communication when you are scared of speaking with your parents. Where you’re scared of what the repercussions are going to be if they don’t like what you have to say. Even though my child is still very young at 18 months one thing I definitely want to do is to have an open communication with her where she isn’t scared to come and talk to me when she needs advice or somethings bothering her.

Have you had any obstacles on your fatherhood journey?

Not so much as an obstacle but one thing I love doing as a Dad is just going to the park or going out with her and having lunch. I know people joke about how the bar for being a dad is very low, but you don’t realize it until you see people coming up to you and praising you for being a “great” dad by doing something so simple as being at the park with them.

What advice would you give others new on their fatherhood journey?

Being patient is going to be your secret weapon! Kids will teach you how to be patient whether you want to or not but it is the greatest skill in your arsenal that you can have

If you could write a quick letter to your father, starting with “Dear Father,” what would you say?

Dear father thank you for working hard and providing an opportunity for me to be successful
