Tell us more about who you are and what you do?
My name is Joseph Vivens. I am a writer, director, producer, and publisher, and I serve as the President of Vivens Media. At Vivens Media, we produce films and podcasts and publish books.
What was the inspiration behind the First Off Podcast?
Parenting is truly on-the-job training, and navigating its challenges brings my wife, Sadhana Jackson-Vivens, and me an immeasurable amount of joy. Over the years, we’ve looked back at both our successes and setbacks with laughter, and often with the realization that each moment contributed to our growth. That inspired us to create First Off, a podcast where we examine the challenges of parenting, give ourselves grace, and reflect on the journey. We approach it with the understanding that being a parent is a privilege, and we aim to build a community of like-minded people who feel the weight of parenthood while offering insight along the way— always with room for laughter.
What does fatherhood mean to you?
I see fatherhood as both a privilege and an opportunity to make a meaningful difference by leaving a living legacy. I prioritize raising my children with empathy and compassion while teaching them to overcome challenges with integrity.
Who is Joseph as a father?
As a father, Joseph embodies love. Love is how I became a father, and my children are manifestations of that love. Everything I do is rooted in keeping love at the forefront of my body, mind, and soul.

How has your platform encouraged you as a man and a father?
My platform has helped me better appreciate my role as a father. It’s easy to get lost in the hustle and bustle; there’s always another school play, birthday party, game, or event, and it can sometimes feel like you’re living in a vacuum. While your wife and kids express gratitude, it can get lost in the shuffle, and you may not fully internalize it. On our platform, we have a segment where we give ourselves a “parenting score,” which allows us to pause, reflect, and acknowledge our efforts. This is my opportunity to say, “I am a good man” because I’m always striving to be better for my family and community. I encourage other fathers to do the same.
What have you learned about yourself since becoming a dad?
I’ve learned that I’m not growing older; I’m still growing up! My children give me the opportunity to become the best version of myself. I hope to see myself through their eyes, just as I hope they see themselves through mine. I view them as the most amazing people I’ve ever met, and I get a front-row seat to the many stages of their lives. It truly feels like watching the greatest show on earth. Through it all, I experience emotions that shape who I am; they are making me wiser, stronger, and more grateful. I’ve learned that growth is ongoing, and as long as I’m alive, I will continue to evolve.
How does the father’s role shape the family as a whole?
As parents, we learn to adapt in real time. In my home, my role is to help set the tone by creating an environment built on trust. I’m fortunate to have an incredible wife with whom I share responsibilities, and that partnership allows me to be present and give her and our children the attention they need when they need it. This requires me to stay attuned to the emotional needs of everyone in my family, which often means setting myself aside and listening without judgment. Joy and happiness aren’t given– they’re discovered.
How can we as fathers continue to shift the narrative through storytelling?
Storytelling is a powerful vehicle for changing hearts and minds. On First Off, I share both my parenting successes and setbacks, which gives listeners permission to reflect on and share their own stories. The more we communicate with one another, the more we discover common ground and create opportunities for support.
What does legacy mean to you?
I think about legacy often. Our planet is a closed ecosystem, and within it, our actions impact one another– whether we realize it or not. As a father, I want to plant seeds that will grow into something positive and influence others for the better. While we hope our children will carry on the family lineage, we also hope for the impact they will have on others. A legacy of love, kindness, and creativity is one worthy of being called a father.
What’s next for you, and how can people connect with you on social media?
I am currently promoting the short film I wrote and directed called, S.O.S., which is on the festival circuit, as well as the documentary I executive produced called, The Solanges: Angels of the Sun. Additionally, my company recently published a children’s book titled Apollo’s Wish/Pluto’s DreamQuest that I am actively promoting. You can connect with me on Instagram and Threads @josephvivens.
