Conversations with Dad: Breaking the Stigma Around Wellness Choices

Black men, specifically fathers, don’t always get space to talk about wellness. Too often, the world expects us to carry everything without breaking a sweat.

“The center cannot hold” is a famous quote taken from the William Butler Yeats poem, ‘The Second Coming’. Yeats may have been referring to humanity heading for anarchy. Or he simply meant that work, family, and stress take their toll. The soul breaks.

The truth is that wellness isn’t a luxury. It’s survival. And breaking the stigma around wellness starts with us.

Wellness conversations in our community aren’t always easy. There’s history there. PsychCentral explains that Black fathers juggle stereotypes, expectations, and cultural pressure. The image of “strong Black man” doesn’t leave much room for vulnerability.

And yet, that’s exactly what’s needed. When we ignore our mental health, we pass the silence down to our kids. We teach them toughness without tools. That cycle stops here.

Dismantling an Oppressive System

Look at what’s happening around the country. Black dads are stepping up, not only at home, but in communities.

MLive reports that fathers in Flint, Michigan, are changing stereotypes through mentorship. They’re showing presence and care aren’t weak; they’re powerful.

Events like Black Men’s Wellness Day push the message further. Brothers are walking, talking, and sharing stories. The stigma is crumbling, one conversation at a time.

Let’s not forget the personal stories. In Compassion Outreach, one dad lays out his struggles with mental health and what it took to face them. His words hit: it’s OK to need help, it’s OK to pause, and it’s OK to put yourself first.

Wellness Isn’t Primarily Therapy (But Therapy Helps)

Myth: wellness is all meditation apps and green juice. Fact: it’s personal.

For some, wellness is therapy. For others, it’s journaling, gym time, or long drives with music blasting. It’s also finding spaces that respect our choices.

A seasoned enthusiast might explore plant-based remedies, including cannabis. StupidDope notes how Buffalo’s cannabis scene is thriving, giving people access to top-shelf products. Finding a New Buffalo dispensary no longer entails going incognito.

These establishments are part of the shift by normalizing plant-based wellness. Vibe Dispensaries believes that cannabis should be enjoyed responsibly and with knowledge. That’s why you should always buy quality products from an established cannabis dispensary.

Mental Health Isn’t a Trend

Research backs this up. A study published on ScienceDirect highlights the challenges Black men face in accessing wellness spaces.

Barriers are real: stigma, cost, and cultural bias. What happens when we break through? The benefits ripple through families, neighborhoods, and generations.

Taraji P. Henson said it best: you’re deserving of joy. Happiness isn’t something we have to earn after grinding ourselves into the ground. It’s our right.

Building Your Wellness Circle

The lone-wolf approach is overrated. Dads need circles. People who check in, call you out, and lift you.

That’s why following the right voices matters. Black Love’s list of Black male wellness influencers worth watching includes Darian Hall, co-founder of Heal Haus, and family therapist Dr Jay Barnett. They’re living proof that wellness is strength.

Want to stay plugged in? Black Enterprise details podcasts centered on Black men’s health. These discussions are real talk, the kind of conversation you can ride to work with and still feel motivated after.

Teaching the Next Generation

Our kids are watching. They notice when we hustle without rest. They notice when we choose silence over honesty.

By owning our wellness, we’re teaching them something new: strength looks like balance.

Imagine your son seeing you prioritize therapy.  Your daughter is watching you set boundaries. Your kids understand that rest is part of a healthy cycle, not a break from it. That’s legacy.

Wellness is Power

Wellness choices embrace power. When you choose to eat better, go to therapy or explore plant-based remedies, you’re choosing strength. You’re choosing presence. You’re choosing life.

We aren’t looking to change the world, but there’s no denying that the narrative is changing. It may not be happening as fast as we’d like, and yet we know that Black fatherhood isn’t about silent suffering anymore. It’s about open conversations, honest decisions, and unapologetic care.

Stigma dies when we stop feeding it. Every time a Black dad speaks on wellness, takes that walk, makes that appointment, or says “nah, I need rest,” the toxic cycle breaks.

We deserve joy. We deserve health. We deserve to thrive. And by using every tool available, we show our kids that strength is more than survival.

It’s living. Fully. Boldly. Without shame.
