Don’t Let Winter Weather Keep You Off The Road With These Tips

Road conditions are always worth keeping in mind as a driver, especially in the winter. The rate of accidents skyrockets, and it’s not always due to people simply being reckless. Sometimes, the roads can be that much of a challenge. However, you can ensure that you’re better equipped to face them with the following tips.

Learn Your Winter Driving Techniques

The calm and controlled approach works best on winter roads. Black ice can be a risk at any time, so it’s worth driving a little more slowly, avoiding any sudden movements, and ensuring that your steering, braking, and acceleration are all smooth. You can also better maintain your traction by using higher gears when pulling away. Be sure to increase your following distance to allow extra time for breaking. Defensive driving is important, as it’s just as often others on the road that can be the hazard.

If You Live In A Cold Climate, Choose A Cold Climate Car

For some people, winter driving is a very occasional hazard they have to mitigate for a brief period of time. If you live in areas where cold climates are more common, however, you should look for cars that are designed for them, with systems like advanced braking, heated mirrors, or the Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive in the 2026 Subaru inventory, which improves traction on snow and wet surfaces. Your regular driving environment should always be a concern when choosing a new car.

Equip The Right Tires, Too

As soon as you see snow, ice, or cold, wet roads, you should make sure that you’re equipped with winter or all-season tires. These are designed not to stiffen in the cold like regular tires, making it easier for them to manage traction. Keep an eye on tire pressure before you head off, too.

Plan Ahead For Every Journey

Before you set off, check the weather forecasts and traffic updates to learn of any hazardous routes or delays you can avoid. Be sure to allow for extra time, in general, so that you’re not under pressure to rush through those winter roads. Spend a little extra time making sure that your vehicle’s lights and wipers are fully working, and clear any snow and ice from your windows, mirrors, and lights. A little forward planning can offer a lot of peace of mind.

Pack An Emergency Kit

As much as you might plan and drive safely, you can’t predict the end of every journey, especially in the winter. The right kit, including things like blankets, warm clothing, a basic first aid kit, and a torch, can help you be ready to navigate any emergency a little more safely. If you have room, try to keep an ice scraper, shovel, and traction aids in your car to help get yourself out of a jam if your car gets stuck.

Sometimes, it will simply be better to stay off the roads and cancel any trips that you have planned. When you’re not snowed in, however, making sure that you’re equipped with the right vehicle, the right parts, and the right knowledge can help you navigate the risks out there much more mindfully.
