Vene’e Roundtree Says “I’m smarter because of him (my Dad)”

Name: Vene’e Roundtree City: Atlanta GA | @iamveneekalika

Dad’s Name: Vincent Roundtree

Describe your relationship with your Father and how did that impact you?

My relationship with my dad , I would say is very close. Growing up he was my tutor. Playing sports, he was my #1 fan and always showed up, and even now still showing up as a prayer warrior during my darkest moments. I think showing up matters in all aspects: physically, mentally, and emotionally.

What’s the best thing you’ve learned from your Father?

During altercations with others, my dad would always say “Jesus was spat on.” At the time, I could careless to hear it but now, it explains why he was always able to handle adversity with such grace. I am still learning this, however, the example he provided lets me know that it is possible.

What struggles did you face in your relationship with your Dad and how did you get through them?

I think as parents get older, they become the child and we become the adults. I would say it is a current struggle when trying to guide him through. He feels as though he can do some of the same things he used to do at the age of 71 now. It is a constant struggle but I’m learning how to navigate the conversations so he understands that he’s still the parent but I have some knowledge as well.

What has your relationship with your Father taught you about what to look/not look for in your partner?

My dad was a homebody. It wasn’t until I graduated highschool (I’m the baby), that he actually started to date my mom again. They became complacent in their day to day and although there was no foul play, it became the norm after 3 kids. I definitely would like someone that will continue to date me even after the kids and although he’s found his step again, it was something I wasn’t able to see the entire 18 years of life at first.

How has your relationship with your Father shaped the woman you are today?

I know what to accept from a man and what not to. I’m smarter because of him, attempting to be more patient, and understanding how to handle adversity with a smile on my face.

If you could write a short letter to your father, starting with “Dear Father,” what would you say?

Dear Father,

Thank you for setting thee example of how a man should lead and guide his family. Nothing you ever did went unnoticed. Because of you, I know how I would want the man in my life to operate with the future kids that we have. Thank you for the late nights of math equations that I just couldn’t quite understand but you wouldn’t let me quit. Or the softball games that you never missed. Most importantly, thank you for the hugs you gave regardless if I wanted them in my teenage years or not. I truly cherish you being a part of my life for every step of the way.
