What does being a father mean to you?
Being a father means fulfilling our life’s worth. Both my success and my failure will be echoed in what I leave behind and my 2 daughters are what I have to give thus far. Trophies degrees accomplishments all come second to the walking embodiment of what is me. “That’s Herb’s daughter” puts a smile on my face from ear to ear every time I hear it. They are my favorite people in the world and they are mine…walking talking little me. As fun as it was to be single without responsibilities being a father trumps it by far. The opportunity to show them better is what lights me up the most. Giving them all the gems I’ve picked up along my journey to make theirs less bumpy.
Describe your experience with your father growing up and how that impacted you today.
I had a great father. I picked up what he did well and I have siblings younger enough to have watched how and why he did certain things that I felt I’d do differently when I was in those shoes as a father. I knew that we were his prized jewels and understood why he worked so hard to give us the best he could.
What things did you take from your experience growing up into your own fatherhood journey?
I’ve tried my best to not wear parental issues in front of my kids and never argue in front of them.
Have you had any obstacles on your fatherhood journey?
Choose your partner wisely. The state hates dads so steer clear of them for as long as you can.
What advice would you give others new on their fatherhood journey?
Be a sponge be patient and love it. Enjoy every moment in the process because it goes by fast. You’re changing diapers one minute and giving them the WiFi password the next.
If you could write a quick letter to your father, starting with “Dear Father,” what would you say?
Dear Father, thanks. I saw it all. It wasn’t always easy but you did a great job and set the tone for success for generations to come.
