What does being a father mean to you?
Being a father means destroying generations of hurt pain disappointments and abuse. I made a choice with a lot of help from my wife to be a better father and leader then I ever seen growing up. Being a father is something that I never knew I was capable of but I would not trade it for anything.
Describe your experience with your father growing up and how that impacted you today.
I had no father growing up and that was a major source of my anger and rage. I wanted a father more then anything and tried to hide it so that I didn’t make my mother feel bad for not telling me who he was. Not having a father did make me want to be a great father but I didn’t realize I had no clue what that looked like until I had my first child. I finally got to meet my father last year and the healing I felt was incredible.
What things did you take from your experience growing up into your own fatherhood journey?
I always want to protect my children from pain that adults can cause because that’s where a lot of my pain started. I just want to be their biggest influence in their lives.
Have you had any obstacles on your fatherhood journey?
I’ve had to grow up and deal with my pain I carried so long and learn to raise my children in love instead of struggle and pain.
What advice would you give others new on their fatherhood journey?
Always be willing to change your ideas of how you think you need to parent and always assess your ability to deal with your child’s needs and seek outside help if you need advice or guidance.
If you could write a quick letter to your father, starting with “Dear Father,” what would you say?
Dear father I’m not mad at you anymore and I love you. I can not change the past but we can create a great future.
