What does being a father mean to you?
Being a father to me is being more like God everyday.
He is our father and he loves us unconditionally and teaches us daily through his word and when we stray a little too far from him, he just wants us to reach out to him and remind him how much we love HIM. So I try to be more like GOD in being a father to my children.
Describe your experience with your father growing up and how that impacted you today.
What things did you take from your experience growing up into your own fatherhood journey?
Forgiving my father for not being in my life and rebuilding that trust with him helped me so much because I understood that some of us don’t mature as quickly as others. So I became more understanding to my family because I loved my dad unconditionally.
Growing up with a mean mom also was tough but I used that to be different to my own children. I tried to be stern when disciplining them but also be fair and communicate why I had to correct them. These are the things I never received as a child.
Have you had any obstacles on your fatherhood journey?
I went through a 3 month depression after getting in some health issues that I couldn’t see my children. And that led to mental stress and more depression. Thank God for his grace and mercy on my soul and seeking him helped me get back up from that darkness.
What advice would you give others new on their fatherhood journey?
My advice would be for you new dads to be resilient responsible and relentless. You now have the blessing from God to raise ,mold and lead a human being or multiple little YOU’s to face this hard life we live. Do it better than your parents did you. Meaning think back to what they didn’t or couldn’t do for you and try to better it for your own children. Because in the end your children will remember how you took care of them and will eventually want to take care of you with the same love.
If you could write a quick letter to your father, starting with “Dear Father,” what would you say?
Dear Father thank you for not being in my life for the first 27 years of it. God knows you weren’t ready. And I probably would have ended up growing up to be just like you. God knew why he let everything turn out the way it did. I am grateful to have you in my life now for the last 17 years. You made up for all those years you were missing from it and for that I love you more than ever and your Godly transformation was a huge inspiration to me now serving Christ wholeheartedly in spirit and in truth. I am grateful to him for reuniting us till he calls us home.
