What does being a father mean to you?
Being a father is a gift from good and a blessing. Everyone doesn’t have kids and everyone can’t be a father but being there when it’s your turn and making every moment count is priceless. Becoming a father was the best blessing.
Describe your experience with your father growing up and how that impacted you today.
My relationship wasn’t the best and that is partly because of distance. My parents weren’t together and that wasn’t easy to deal with when I was younger. U got to see him over the summer but he had me at camp and he worked all the time. Me and my father didn’t start having real talks and better understanding of each other until I had my daughter. For the most part I liked at my grandfathers as my dad on a day yo day basis.
What things did you take from your experience growing up into your own fatherhood journey?
– getting to know my daughter and be there and present
– making sure that my daughter knows that she is loved unconditionally no matter what me and her mother status is
– make sure that she has everything she needs to grow up to be a strong Black women in this world that she lives in ( for why her name is Mahogany)
Have you had any obstacles on your fatherhood journey?
My schedule has always been my biggest obstacle in my life. I am a small business owner as well as I work a 9-5 in corporate America. The last 5 years I have been a middle school football coach which is something I do in my limited spare time. So when it came to juggling all those hats and also making time to be there for my daughter and not be a zombi when with her because I am tired from doing my day to day to provide for her. My multitasking skills have truly been tested but I wouldn’t change it for the world.
What advice would you give others new on their fatherhood journey?
Take each day as a new day and enjoy the moments. We are going to mess up and make mistakes just don’t be scared to say ask for assistance along the journey.
If you could write a quick letter to your father, starting with “Dear Father,” what would you say?
Dear Fathers,
There is no love like the love of your own seed. When you get to watch them grow and give them all the lesson you were taught over life are priceless so please cherish them moments. Don’t be scared to make mistakes just don’t make to many lol! Also try your best to steal a few moments of Me time. Also no love like a daughters love #girldad
