Throwing a Party for Your Teen

When it comes to parenting teenagers, impressing them is really difficult. Throwing a party field teenager can feel a lot like planning a major event with a guest list, a strategy for snacks, and soundtrack all rolled into one. Teens want something fun and memorable, while parents usually want something organized that won’t end with glitter permanently attached to the ceiling. Thankfully, finding a balance between exciting and manageable is very possible.

A good way to keep everybody entertained is to choose a venue with built in activities like Malibu Jack’s, where teens can stay busy and parents can breathe a little easier. Places with games, attractions or group activities can help to avoid awkward moments where everyone stares at their phones wondering what to do next. The first step in planning a successful team party is understanding what they actually want.

This sounds very simple, but party trends change quickly. One teenager may dream of a giant arcade party and adventure with their friends, while another just wants pizza, music, and a small group of close people around them. Asking for their input helps to avoid misunderstandings and does make them feel included in that planning process, which is the most important thing. Food is another major factor. Teenagers are usually happy with the crowd pleasers like pizza, sliders, tacos and fries and snack tables tend to disappear quickly. A build your own dessert station can also be a huge hit. Whether it’s sundaes, cookies or cupcakes, interactive treats make the party feel more fun without requiring restaurant level cooking skills from parents.

Music is also something that matters. A carefully chosen playlist with your teenager’s input is important. You want them to help you to create it so that the vibe feels current, personal, and what everybody’s listening to. Nobody wants surprise lyrics blasting through the speakers during cake time while grandma is visiting those, so just make sure you give the playlist a preview beforehand. Activities for a teen party should be planned in advance, even if the party seems casual. Teenagers can act laid back, but a little structure prevents boredom. Games, photo booths, karaoke, trivia contests, or outdoor activities can help your guests to relax and interact.

Of course, every parent also thinks about supervision. The trick is to be present without hovering, like a security camera with snacks. Teenagers appreciate independence, but they still need boundaries and a safe environment. Keeping communication open, setting expectations early and checking in occasionally can help the party to run smoothly without making guests feel uncomfortable.

The most important thing to remember is that teenagers often care more about the experience than anything else. They probably won’t remember whether the napkins match the decorations, but they will remember laughing with their friends and feeling celebrated. Throwing a party if your teenager doesn’t have to become a stressful production, you just need to make sure that you plan it so that you can have happy memories and not a giant clean up headache.
