Here’s the Late-Night Travel Mistakes Tourists Make in Big Cities

Late-night travel in a big city sounds so glamorous in theory, especially if you’re paying extra for private tours. Like, maybe you’re on a couples vacation and wining and dining with your partner while enjoying city views from a skyscraper (honestly, who wouldn’t want that?). Like, the lights, the energy, the “this city never sleeps” thing. And then real life shows up, and well, it’s not that amazing like you hoped.

How? Maybe you can’t get into a club, maybe you’re lost. A couple of hours ago, it was super lively, but now it’s gotten to the point where it’s just way too quiet. Maybe your phone is about to die, maybe it’s hard to get an Uber, maybe you can’t hail a taxi. Well, maybe this, maybe that, there’s a lot to think about here, right?

Well, you’re a tourist, so it’s not like you’re going to know how one city is during nightlife compared to another. In a weird way, they all kind of have their own little rules. Well, they kind of do. And, unless you’re a local, how are you even going to know?

Thinking Everything Stays Open Late

Yep, this is the classic mistake, because people hear “big city” and assume it means 24/7 food, 24/7 options, 24/7 convenience. Not always. Some places shut down early on weekdays, some neighborhoods get sleepy fast, and even when a venue is open, the kitchen might have clocked out ages ago. So it helps to check kitchen hours, not just closing time, because a place can close at 3 am, but their kitchen closes at 10 pm, for example.

Showing Up with No Plan

Now, you thought the one above was bad, well, this is where big city nightlife humbles tourists, like really fast at that. So, some venues are strict, and not in a “polite and helpful” way either. This can mean guest lists, timed entry exists, tickets exist, dress codes exist, capacity rules exist, and showing up at peak time with no prep is basically volunteering to stand in a line for fun. A lot of people do it, and it’s not a good idea.

So, if you’re partying with friends, for example, or at least wanting to, well, you absolutely need to look into group party booking and reservations, while sure, maybe by chance you all can get it, the chances are way higher that you’re not going to get in at all, and then you’ll argue about what to do next. No, not worth it.

Trying to Do too Much, that’s too Far Apart

Well, maybe this one isn’t much of a surprise here. But a lot of tourists plan a night like a highlight reel, drinks here, dinner there, club there, afters there, and it sounds exciting until it becomes constant travelling. And in big cities, travelling isn’t nothing.

It’s time, it’s money, it’s waiting, it’s people splitting up, it’s the night losing momentum. But people don’t really realize that, well, most tourists don’t at least. But the better move is picking one area and treating it like home base.
