How To Teach Your Child To Take Care Of A New Pet

If you have a child, chances are they’ve asked you for a pet. Perhaps this was a fleeting ask, or maybe they are continually hounding you for a cat, dog, or even a hamster. Adding a pet to your family is one of the best things you can do, but it’s also one of the biggest responsibilities. It’s important your children know that adding an animal to the mix is about more than just cuddles, they will need to do things such as walk them (if you get a dog), feed them and take care of their day to day wellbeing. As the primary caregiver, you need to make sure you’re also aware of what’s involved, from the feeding and responsibilities, to having the number and address of an emergency vet services handy in case you need it. In this article we take a look at some tips on how you can teach your child to take care of a new pet – and it can help you learn some things too! Keep reading to find out more.

Explain the realistic duties involved before you get your pet

Before you get a pet, you need your child to be aware of the realistic side of it. They probably think it involves feeding, cuddles and playing, but there is so much more involved. Teach them about the different types of pet you could get and the work and aspects involved in this. You also need to teach them about the lifespan of a pet, which can be a tough but important conversation to have.

Find chores they can get involved in

One of the best ways to teach your child to take care of a pet is by giving them age-appropriate responsibilities they can genuinely own. Start with little tasks like refreshing the water bowl each morning, helping to measure out food, brushing fur, or tidying toys. As they grow, you can introduce slightly bigger tasks like short supervised walks or cleaning a cage. The key is consistency. Make pet care part of their routine rather than an occasional request. This not only builds responsibility but also helps them understand what’s really involved in caring for a pet.

Take them with you to a pet rescue shelter

Visiting a pet rescue shelter can be an incredibly powerful learning experience for children. It helps them see that animals rely on humans for safety, love and care, and that owning a pet is a serious, long-term responsibility. Talk to them about why some animals end up in shelters and what it takes to rehome them successfully. Encourage questions and allow them to observe how staff feed, clean and exercise the animals.

These are just a few things you can do that can help you to teach your child to take care of a new pet. Whether they’re a younger child or an older one, a pet can help them become more responsible, compassionate and some pets like dogs have been found to reduce anxiety and stress.
