Road trips are a lot of fun. You get to see multiple areas of one country in one trip, or you could visit several countries in a journey, such as Montenegro and Croatia – the possibilities are endless (which is the exact reason road trips are so popular).
If you have booked yourself a road trip for your breakaway, as your holiday approaches, it’s important that you put some preparation in before you go. It goes without saying that if you are using your own vehicle, you should take it to a garage for a check-up. You should also make sure you have breakdown cover and, on the more fun side, a Spotify playlist.
To help prepare you for your road trip, keep on reading for our guide on five things to get yourself prepared.
Getting your car checked over
A good place to start is getting your vehicle checked over. If you plan to take your own can, a Service and Repair may be required to get it ready for the journey. When taking your car into a garage, you can ask them to perform all the safety checks, ensuring it’s safe to drive. Areas like your wheels should be looked over, as well as ensuring you have enough oil in the car and that your brake discs haven’t worn down too much. Some checks you can do yourself, such as checking your tire tread depth, but other checks, like your brake discs, can be harder to do. If you have recently become a father, it’s even more important that you ensure your car is completely safe for the trip.
Spotify playlist
A good Spotify playlist is a must. Putting together a playlist before you head off on your road trip helps set the mood and keeps energy levels high throughout the journey. Put together a playlist of popular songs for long stretches to lift the mood, and relaxing songs for when you are on a scenic route. Make sure you pick some songs yourself, and then ask your passengers to pick some songs as well; this way, everyone feels included. It also means your passengers will live up when their songs come on, making the trip feel alive, when you may be on a long stretch of road. For a road trip, we wouldn’t recommend having Spotify ads, as that’s simply annoying. Alternatively, you could sign up for Apple Music.
Organising travel documents
Something that has to be done is putting together all your travel documents for the trip. When going away, you should ensure you have travel insurance, your driver’s licence with you, breakdown cover, as well as any emergency contacts in case you do get in an accident. Keeping both digital and physical copies of important documents can provide extra peace of mind, especially when travelling long distances. For travel insurance, the best thing to do is run some quotes on a comparison site. Just like getting your car insurance, there are many sites that offer multiple providers from which you can choose.
Researching your route
What we would suggest you do is load up your journey on Google Maps and take a look through it to familiarise yourself with the different routes you are going to take. Researching the route, this helps reduce the risk of any unexpected delays or wrong turns along the way. It also gives you the chance to make some changes to your journey in advance if you come across something that you would prefer not to do, such as driving along certain motorways. When the day comes for your road trip, using Waze as your satnav may be beneficial, as this often shows very accurate traffic updates, as a lot is reported by users on the road. Google Maps is also very helpful for long journeys and shows you where to go.
Packing for your journey
Packing efficiently can make a big difference to your comfort on your road trip. Make sure you have packed some of the essentials, such as snacks, water, phone chargers, and sunglasses. It’s also advised that you pack a small emergency kit, in case something does occur on the road. This kit should include a torch, blanket, first-aid supplies, and basic tools. Being prepared helps you handle unexpected situations without stress and keeps everyone comfortable throughout the trip.
We hope we have given you some useful pointers on preparing yourself for a road trip. There are so many things you can do to prepare for your holiday. The sooner you start planning, the easier getting prepared will be.
