5 Car Fixes That Can’t Wait

Once you’ve been driving for long enough, something going wrong with your vehicle is inevitable. Many times drivers are tempted to delay fixes, but there are some situations where you just need to sort the problem out immediately, otherwise you could be putting yourself in danger or creating a situation where your vehicle becomes a write-off.

So, what are these problems, and how do you know when you have them?

Brake issues

Sorting out brake issues immediately is an obvious non-negotiable. As soon as you see the brake warning light turn on or you notice a problem with the brakes themselves, like grinding noises or the car pulling to one side, then fixing it is essential.

But what are the causes of brake issues? One of the problems is usually low fluid in the hydraulic tubes that lead to the calipers. Another problem is sometimes worn pads. The pads simply don’t have enough surface area to clench onto the brakes. In these situations, you’ll want to avoid driving the vehicle where possible. Get it towed instead.

Broken windshield

Another issue that can’t wait is a broken windshield. Unfortunately, small chips and cracks can grow over time and ultimately windshields can shatter because of the way the glass is made.

For this reason, always go for windscreen repairs when you notice a problem. Fixing the problem early can prevent it from getting worse later on.

Engine overheating

Engine overheating is another significant issue that can affect your vehicle and something that you can’t really ignore. Once the temperature gauge gets into the red, usually there’ll be a burning smell, and you’ll see steam emanating from the hood. Unfortunately, if you continue to drive when your vehicle is overheated, it can damage the internal components of the engine. These are very expensive to replace and sometimes lead to a write-off or even a fire. If you see the engine overheating, pull over immediately and call for help. Usually, it’s a problem with the radiator system, and you might have a coolant leak. Fixing this is much simpler, easier, and costs far less than replacing an entire engine.

Sudden loss of power or stall

Another reason, another car fix that just can’t wait is a sudden loss of power or stalling. Especially when you’re driving at speed. One of the main issues is fuel ignition. If the car isn’t igniting fuel properly, then it won’t move forward. Sometimes, electrical vehicle control systems can also kick in if sensors have picked up something dangerous and need to stop the car. When this happens, you’ll need to take the car to a mechanic, often by towing it there.

Fluid leaks under the car

Finally, don’t ignore fluid leaks under the car, especially if you see coolant puddles or brake fluid. These can lead to engine seizures and with leaks that cause overheating

To fix these issues, car mechanics will usually hoist your vehicle up onto a platform and look underneath to find any cracked pipes. Then they can replace damaged sections.
