6 New Hobbies To Take Up After 40

When you turn 40, it’s often a good idea to take on new hobbies and adopt a fresh attitude and perspective towards life. Sometimes it is the last decade in which you’ll be able to do everything that you want to do.

But what hobbies should you take up during or after the age of 40, which are going to have the biggest impact on your life?

Jiu Jitsu

Starting Jiu-Jitsu or any martial art in general can be a great thing to do after the age of 40. It forces your body to become stronger and makes you work on your balance in ways that you probably didn’t even do during your youth.

The best thing about this sport is that all you need is a mat and an instructor, or whichever local group that you can go to. You can practise as regularly as you like.

Woodworking

If scrapping around in a gym with other men doesn’t sound like fun to you, then maybe you could start woodworking after the age of 40. This skill is often in high demand, especially if you’re right in the middle of family life. You’re able to restore old pieces of furniture, build new ones, and even carve spoons if you want to. Many men find woodworking a therapeutic activity that helps them relax, giving them time away from family in the workshop.

Fly Fishing

If you really want to get out into nature, then you might be taking up fly fishing. It is quiet and methodical, but it’s also enormously rewarding. In some areas, you’re allowed to keep and eat the fish that you catch, so you can also get a good meal out of it as well. Plus, there are so many little details involved, including things like the time of day that you go and the tackle that you need to use. It’s the sort of thing you can think about for years.

Hog Hunting

You could also go hog hunting depending on where you live. Getting outside and doing some hunting can be a real thrill, especially if you haven’t experienced it before. Just make sure you go with licensed instructors who understand the risks. Wild animals can be dangerous, so always be careful.

Astronomy

After 40, you might also want to take up amateur astronomy. By this stage in your life, you probably have the savings you need to buy a proper telescope that you can point up toward the night sky.

If you get into this hobby, you’ll need to learn about the sky and where things are. You’ll also need to understand things like how to adjust your telescope and the best conditions to make astronomical observations.

Motorcycling

Finally, you might want to get into motorcycling. This can be a fun activity if you are a social person and want to have complete freedom. You don’t need a great deal of disposable income, and you also don’t need to ask permission to do it.
