What does being a father mean to you?

Being a father means the world to me. I have grown tremendously because of my kids. They bring so much joy and purpose to my life. They have slowed me down and forced me to focus on being a better person everyday.

 

Describe your experience with your father growing up and how that impacted you today.

My father and I had a great relationship starting off but things changed after my parents got divorced. I grew up in a small city with a lot of violence surrounding me. My mom and dad got into arguments a lot. Those times really hurt the relationship I had with my father. I naturally gravitated towards my mom because I lived with her. My dad and I slowly built a better relationship starting in my early 20’s. With us having such a rocky relationship over the years I have focused on being involved with my kids as much as possible. I don’t ever want there to be a void between us.

What things did you take from your experience growing up into your own fatherhood journey?

My mom did a great job raising me and my siblings. She always spoke confidence into us and I make it a point to the same with my kids. That energy she gave me really set me up to attack my dreams and believe anything was possible.

Have you had any obstacles on your fatherhood journey?

I have definitely been challenged as a father. My wife and I had our first kid at 20 years old and twins at 25. Continuing to go to school and work was very difficult for us. I wanted to give up at times but I couldn’t live with myself if I didn’t give my all for my family.

What advice would you give others new on their fatherhood journey?

I’d encourage other fathers to reach out and connect with the solid men they have in their life for guidance. Locking in with your village is a key component. Those people will hold you accountable and have your back.

If you could write a quick letter to your father, starting with “Dear Father,” what would you say?

Dear father,

I know the job of a parent is not easy but I need you to be the best version of yourself and pour into me. I still love you and appreciate your presence in my life. You are not a failure. Be confident and purposeful with your actions. Your grandkids need you and you kids need you. Don’t give up on yourself. Don’t give up on us. We are stronger together.
