What does being a father mean to you?
Being a father means everything to me. I only have one biological child but father/dad to a few. They’re the reason I go hard everyday.
Describe your experience with your father growing up and how that impacted you today.
Growing up I didn’t have a relationship with my father. I was raised in Chicago he was in the dc area and passed when I was in high school. The struggles growing up made me never want to struggle. In my 20’s I was told that another man was my biological father but he died before I could meet him. All of this made me want to be better.
What things did you take from your experience growing up into your own fatherhood journey?
My experience not having a father around made me realize how important it is to be there for not just your children but any child that you can reach. Positive male role models are important.
Have you had any obstacles on your fatherhood journey?
My obstacles in my fatherhood journey were stressful but small in comparison to some of the story’s that I hear. Not being with my daughters mother afterwards caused a lot of tension involved a lot of court. I was fortunate to gain equal custody without having to pay child support which made it so much easier to provide for her.
What advice would you give others new on their fatherhood journey?
I would tell them that they are just as responsible for everything that your child needs as the mother. You are just as equal when it comes to your role. There should be no sacrifice for your children that the mother makes that you aren’t willing to make yourself. Your presence is very important. We are the leaders we are the first teachers.
If you could write a quick letter to your father, starting with “Dear Father,” what would you say?
I wish I had a chance t know you. Your grandchildren will know me. I forgive you and I love you
