What does being a father mean to you?
To me being a father first and foremost means providing a safe enriched childhood and being a good example of what a responsible man should be.Being a full time single father means wearing different hats at times and not being afraid to show my kids vulnerability and teaching them that it’s ok to express their own vulnerability.
Describe your experience with your father growing up and how that impacted you today.
What things did you take from your experience growing up into your own fatherhood journey?
As a kid spending time with my dad playing sports or watching sports taught me that spending time with your kids and giving them your undivided attention is huge. Being a full time single dad and firefighter/AEMT has taught me that spending time with my boys is a gift.
Have you had any obstacles on your fatherhood journey?
My kids mother passed away in 2017… I think the journey of helping my kids heal and swallowing my own pride and going to see a therapist was a game changer for us.
What advice would you give others new on their fatherhood journey?
There’s no such thing as a perfect dad, admit that you need help, and don’t be afraid to ask for help. The most important thing is just spending time doing the things that they are interested in even if it isn’t a real interest of yours. In my experience that’s usually when they open up to you and tell you how they feel.
If you could write a quick letter to your father, starting with “Dear Father,” what would you say?
Dear Father, Thank you for the good and the bad. I appreciate how you continue to make the effort to stay in my life and my kids lives.
