What does being a father mean to you?
A leader. An example being able to represent what a male figure should be. In my situation, I’m a stepdad of a 12 yr old as well as a father of a 2 year old. I’ve realized through the years that my example and “model” will be what is followed or deemed to be correct. I’ve been very aware of how I do things in order to set the right example through the things I read, how a man should treat a woman, and having a “no excuse mentality.” Communication is a big part of this relationship also.
Describe your experience with your father growing up and how that impacted you today.
My father was always a great provider but we never really had a relationship. I realized later in life, especially after doing all the reading that I’m doing these days, that his father wasn’t present In his life because he died at a young age. My dad did the best he could with what he knew and had. He didn’t have a “model” to follow. I’m changing the generational curses and creating a better example going forward.
What things did you take from your experience growing up into your own fatherhood journey?
I wanted to be a better communicator and more relational.
Have you had any obstacles on your fatherhood journey? If so, explain.
The relationship between my (step) son and I had was a bit rocky in the beginning because his father was still coming in and out of his life but not consistently at all. His father would tell him not to listen to me. I just kept loving him and showing him how I was different.
What advice would you give others new on their fatherhood journey?
Find people who set that example for you so that you can learn from them. Also, understand that you don’t have to have it all figured out. I’d suggest reading a lot of personal development books.
If you wanted to write a quick note to your father, starting with “Dear Father,” what would it be?
I’ve done this but to quickly speak on it, I wish we established better communication in my teens. I’m a lot more like you then I thought I would be.
