Describe your relationship with your Father and how did that impact you?
My father is truly the first man I loved! We have a wonderful relationship and I can always talk to him about anything. He has been the support system that every daughter needs. I don’t think I would be as headstrong, ambitious, or have the ability to simply be myself, without his guidance.
What’s the best thing you’ve learned from your Father?
I learned to always “challenge the question”, meaning…don’t ever be naive, and let someone try and persuade you into one way of thinking. He taught me that it’s ok to be competitive and strive for the best, every chance I get.
What struggles did you face in your relationship with your Dad and how did you get through them?
Sometimes, I felt like I couldn’t 100% depend on him. He was stretched thin with work, being a husband, my other siblings, and trying to my time for himself. As I got older, I realized that having so many responsibilities can be tiresome. These days we will go to the sports bar and watch a game and discuss the past, and we both are able to get a deeper understanding of how each other feels.
What has your relationship with your Father taught you about what to look/not look for in your partner?
My dad is a family man. He loves having fun, loves kids and is a goofball. He also has always been very fair and understanding. I wanted my husband to be all of those things, especially someone that doesn’t take life too seriously and can make me laugh.
How has your relationship with your Father shaped the woman you are today?
My father grew up in Kansas City, MO. It can be a very dangerous place to live. He could’ve chosen a different route but God had plans for him. He not only shaped me to be cautious wherever I am, but I’m fair, grounded, and all-around love to help other people. He is more of a charismatic introvert; I’m a charismatic extrovert. He would be the one to tell you that I’m a mini him, in woman form.
If you could write a short letter to your father, starting with “Dear Father,” what would you say?
Dear Father,
As your 1st daughter, and the first man I loved, I want to say thank you! There are so many people in this world that don’t get the opportunity to be as close to their fathers as I am to you. You chose to be in my life and taught me things that have made me the “beam” of sunshine that I am today. I appreciate you being fair, protective, honest and hilarious! Your light will always shine through me. I love you forever!
