What does being a father mean to you?
Everything honestly, my father and I had a relationship but it wasn’t the one I yearned for and needed. It was the “here and there” type of relationship. He passed away at a early age and that was something that hit hard ya know. So when I became a father, like the exact day he was born lol. I just felt that connection, I felt the love and in my heart I knew our bond would be everything I wanted with my father.
Describe your experience with your father growing up and how that impacted you today.
It wasn’t the best and there were many times I would feel alone, confused and not wanted. Though I am the oldest of three and my mother and I are very close. There was this void I literally knew was missing not only in my mothers life but mine also. It was connection I’ve seen other kids in my neighborhoods, friends and a few other family members had. So just growing up it affected me in school, connecting with others.
Today as a father of a 4 year old young prince, i have a better spiritual connection with my father. Getting closer to God, reading more and continuing to grow through my art, family, my business and sharing every moment of my life with son. Showing him the love from both his mother and I; the love and relationship neither her or I got from a father.
What things did you take from your experience growing up into your own fatherhood journey?
I took away a lot of things, such as being consistent, sticking to your word and just staying on top of your responsibilities. Setting goals that are tangible and reachable. I learned that complaining and not taking “self action” never helps the situation that you actually want to better. Listening to others, being more empathetic to someone’s emotions, situations and really providing support. The same love that you yearn for in a parent has to be given, cause their may be others who look up to me as a big brother or father figure. Which honestly I know a lot of my cousins, friends do and not just my own siblings.
Have you had any obstacles on your fatherhood journey?
I have honestly, it’s been getting time for my art and business. Getting time with my fiancé and being far away from my family back in Minnesota.
What advice would you give others new on their fatherhood journey?
Mannnnnnn have fun, allow yourself to be a kid all over again. Listen listen listen lol, they really love when you do. They just want to spend every minute with you, they don’t care if your broke or rich. Your time and a strong connection means everything to them. Good energy and love conquers all, being a father is dope, the greatest blessings. Being a parent and being there.
If you could write a quick letter to your father, starting with “Dear Father,” what would you say?
Dear Father hey isn’t crazy I live in the Bay Area now. Unfortunately the Raiders left again smdh lol. Though I get to watch all my VIKES games with your grandson. Just like them days when you would watch the Bulls and Raiders games. Love you always
