Eyen Williams says being a Father “means blazing a new trail that my father didn’t.”

What does being a father mean to you?

Being a father to me means being the model of a man my daughter should be interested in. It means blazing a new trail that my father didn’t. It means being a protector and provider for my family. It means learning to love my daughter for her all her brilliance and all her faults. Teaching her that everything in life is a lesson you must learn.

Describe your experience with your father growing up and how that impacted you today.

My father wasn’t around until I was 15. Him not being around helped me keep in mind what not to do when I had kids. It let me know that not every man is fit to have a child just because they have the tools to do so. Once I met my father I thought he was the coolest guy in the world. Then as i got older i got a chance to know him on an adult level and we had a conversation where I told him i was glad he wasn’t around or i would’ve ended up like him.

What things did you take from your experience growing up into your own fatherhood journey?

Not growing up with a father just allowed me to take bits and pieces of fatherhood from the men in my family that i admire and apply it to my own life. I’m a new dad so I’m not able to reciprocate all that i learned but i will be able to share those experiences with my daughter. From fishing trips to supporting her every desire that she wants to explore IE: ballet/ musical instruments etc.

What advice would you give others new on their fatherhood journey?

Just be open to the experience your child may set you on. I’m a new father myself and I’m excited to see what hobbies she wants to embark on and wants me to participate in.

If you could write a quick letter to your father, starting with “Dear Father,” what would you say?

Dear Father, There’s going to come a time when you may get a chance to be apart of one of your children’s lives and if I were you i wouldn’t pass it up. Life allows us a second chance sometimes a third or fourth chance but being a father is a job that’s never complete. You’re still on your first chance, don’t pass it up.
