What does being a father mean to you?

Being a father to me is the most important job I’ll ever have in my life. To be entrusted as a vessel by God to mold, shape and model my kids lives is something I don’t take lightly. Being a father is about protecting and providing and building a legacy.

1000 fearless fathers-dear fathers

Describe your experience with your father growing up and how that impacted you today.

My father was very present in my life by being involved with each and every activity I participated in. He took the time to very intentional about the things I was exposed to, knowing that I one day would have to grow to be: 1. A man. 2. A black man in America.

Have you had any obstacles on your fatherhood journey? If so, explain.

Becoming a father at the young age of 23 created a lot of challenges as I was still finding way as a man. Coupled that with getting married and subsequently divorced by 26, created a lot of challenges in regards to me being there day in, day out with my kids.

I’m blessed to have re-married and have another child with my now wife and can be the traditional father I always envisioned.

What advice would you give others new on their fatherhood journey?

First, pray and pray often. Secondly, surround yourself with other like-minded fathers (younger and/or older). Too often, we as men do not collaborate or communicate our challenges with others. Surrounding oneself with a village of men will help the growing pains of fatherhood.

If you could write a quick letter to your father, starting with “Dear Father,” what would it be?

Dear Father,

Thank you for the lessons you instilled in me. They have carried me on my journey. I’m now passing them on to your grandchildren in hopes they will one day give to my grandkids.

Name 5 fathers you cosign.
