Growing up, I would have never imagined attending a concert by a local artist in Tallahassee, Florida. There have been countless musicians from Florida that had made it big in the music industry such as Trick Daddy, Trina, and T-Pain, just to name a few. My first Hip Hop concert featured G-UNIT, T.I., and Ludacris. As I got older my taste in music gravitated to more lyricists like DMX and Janelle Monae. One day I decided to venture off to see some local talent in the area and I stumbled upon a local billiards and lounging spot called the ‘Warehouse; this location was a gold mine for local bands to debut their music. When I got inside the venue it was a small stage, but the crowd was full of people jumping up and down and clapping their hands while Royce Lovett performed his latest hit a song at the time ‘Show Me Love’ from his EP ‘Writing On The Wall. That day will forever resonate with me because I literally witnessed a superstar being born in front of my very own eyes.
Royce Lovett was born and raised in the city of Tallahassee, Florida. He began singing in church, where his mother led worship. Royce once taught himself how to play guitar, and he even started writing music. In the 11th grade, young Royce played at a local pizza shop. After finishing high school Royce married his best friend Hannah Lovett and together they share two amazing boys. His oldest son is ten and his youngest son is five. Royce currently homeschools his two boys and he is also teaching his oldest son guitar lessons.
At the beginning of his career, Royce was often pressured to only be an R&B and Gospel singer but Royce veered away to set his own lane as an artist. In 2015, Royce gets signed to Motown Gospel Record label but it took Royce a year to get his music up and running; each album is like a chapter from his memoir of Love and his ongoing fight for change in the world. In 2016, Royce releases his ‘Love Wins’ EP. Royce then follows up with the ‘Love & Other Dreams’ album in 2017. As Royce’s career persist, he starts making appearances in TED Talks. TED Talks are motivation videos from speakers on education, and business just to name a few. ‘This Is America’ is one of Royce’s latest Ted Talks, where he tells the story of his grandmother living in the 1930s. There is also another TED Talk where he shares his views on how to unlock ‘Love, Purpose, and Security’. In 2019, Royce got an opportunity to be a contestant on Season 17 of the ‘Voice.’ Royce was eliminated but he was grateful for the opportunity and thankful to work alongside Gwen Stefani. During the unfortunate events of the pandemic, Royce had to put some things on hold but he was fortunate to rekindle some time to do normal things with his family like riding bikes and preparing his favorite dish fish tacos.
Today, Royce is still performing and you might even catch him performing in a city near you. His latest single is out now titled Mama, dedicated to his mother and all the women around the world. All in all, Royce may have come from a small town, but his music is his true destiny. Royce married his best friend Hannah and together they created two great legacies to share with the world. Royce’s love for his hometown reminds us to stay strong and stay grounded.
